BROOKDALE FARM

Where Our Food Begins

Spring is coming to Pungo! Soon it will be time for spring planting. March and April are the perfect time for students to learn about seeds and plants and to discover where their food begins!

Get the dirt — Students will learn about soil and the needs of growing plants. They’ll learn about agricultural products that come from the soil and products that come from animals. Each person will also plant vegetable and flower seeds to take back to school to sprout and later take home to transplant and grow to maturity.

Look into seeds — Take a fun, hands-on look at seeds—where all food really begins. One student will become a little sprout and give everyone a chance to see what it is like to be a germinating seed. Children will learn about plant products and how they are in many things we eat and use. Some activities take place in our greenhouse, letting students experience first-hand how farmers can modify the environment.

Hayride-  Join the farmer on a wagon ride past a vegetable field and see early planted sweet corn.  Visit a hayfield, where you will learn that one of our favorite foods, the hamburger, really begins on farms and ranches, not in grocery stores or restaurants!

Farm Animals — Discover how farm animals look, feel, sound, and smell. Learn how various animals are alike and how they are different. See and learn about our sheep, pony and donkey.   See hay, grain and prepared feeds that our animals eat.

Picnic — Enjoy your snack or picnic lunch before or after your field trip. Use our picnic tables or bring blankets and sit on the grass the old fashioned way. Sure beats the school cafeteria!

Personal Touch — We specialize in working with public and private school groups, from pre-school through third grade. Parents are welcome to join your field trip. Special-needs students are always welcome at Brookdale Farm.
